Alzheimer's Association - Central MD Chapter - $20,000The Alzheimer's Association through its project SPEED--Services, Programs and Engagement for Early Dementia will develop programs to serve people with early stage dementia. Funding will support training for staff, an 8-week education series for people with early stage dementia and their care partners, an early stage support group, and a 9-week pilot social program. The Alzheimer's Association will be partnering with the Howard County Office this project.
Autism Society of America, Howard County Chapter - $5,000The Autism Society of Howard County is requesting support to host a one "Lose the Training Wheels Bike Camp" in partnership with the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks (HCRP) for children with developmental disabilities. HCRP is contributing space, background checks, volunteer companions, and a site manager to this project.
Bollman Bridge Elementary School - $5,000The Bollman Bridge Wellness Committee designed a number of programs to assist students, families, staff and the community at large identify and reduce risk factors related to specific chronic diseases and adopt a healthy lifestyle. The school holds Town Hall meetings with families and community members to dialogue, plan, and receive feedback on effectiveness of programs offered.
Bright Minds Foundation - $10,000Bright Minds in collaboration with HC Board of Education and HCPSS identified the digital divide as a major equity issue facing over 500 middle school students in the HCPSS. In 2008, the Foundation began working with the Lazarus Foundation to provide middle schoolers who did not have desktop computer with keyboard, speakers, Microsoft Office, Anti-virus as training for the student and one parent.
Community Action Council - $10,000CAC would like to purchase an infrared camera and a combustion analyzer to enhance the Weatherization Assistance Program. This equipment will also assist CAC in analyzing the quality of energy related to home improvement.
Community Action Council - $5,000CAC is requesting support to hire a consultant to conduct a comprehensive relevant information on Howard County's low income population in order to identify specific needs and conditions. The information will be used to guide decisions regarding future allocation of resources as well as resource gaps, challenges and opportunities in future programming. The information is critical for CAC's 2011-2013 strategic plan.
Folly Quarter Middle School - $2,368Folly Quarter Middle School is requesting funding to assist in the purchase of a 9'x12' greenhouse to provide their students with an understanding of charity and the environment, thus contributing to their science and life education and would provide a hands on service learning project. Additionally, the Grassroots Homeless Shelter would be the recipient of the fresh produce raised in the greenhouse.
Forest Ridge Elementary School - $2,250Forest Ridge Elementary, in North Laurel, plans to establish their school as a "Girls on the Run" site in the coming year to address girls’ healthy lifestyle choices for third through fifth graders. The "Girls on the Run" program is a national organization that encourages positive social, emotional and physical development; the Howard County council began in 2009. Girls on the Run is a life-changing character development program for girls grades 3-8 that uses running to teach values and a sense of self.
Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, Inc. - $25,000Grassroots is requesting support for the Route One Day Resource Center-which serves homeless individuals living outside the Route One Corridor. The Center's services include access to health care, addictions treatment, nutrition and employment counseling, social security information, among other things. Services are provided by volunteers, the faith community, and a part-time volunteer coordinator.
HC DrugFree - $40,000HC DrugFree is requesting support to continue to provide teen drug and alcohol prevention education programs, the annual Teen Job and Volunteer Fair, and other resources while responding to the growing needs of the community.
Loyola Clinical Centers - $17,675Loyola University Maryland, in partnership with the Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts, is seeking funding to continue Expanding Horizons: Broadway Kids program a pilot project that uses a collaborative speech-language/performing arts method to improve social communications for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The program provides direct speech-language services to children who have identified social language deficits secondary to ASD or other developmental disabilities using performing arts with their non-disabled siblings and peers.
Marriotts Ridge High School - $2,456Marriotts Ridge High School established a Bereavement Group this school year to help students process their feelings and begin to heal from the loss of a loved one. Support is provided by the Student Services Team at Marriotts Ridge and Gilchrist Hospice Center on an in-kind basis. They are requesting funds to continue to provide support for the students in need through the summer months as well as support during the next school year.
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Inc. - $19,022Meals on Wheels proposes to hire a part-time outreach coordinator to recruit new home-bound elderly clients and local program volunteers in the North Laurel-Savage area. Due to the distance from the primary base of operation, the Howard County Meals on Wheels program currently pays two drivers to deliver meals to 36 clients in the southeast region.
TAI Sophia Institute - $12,100Tai Sophia is proposing to provide a series of workshops and practical techniques around healthy lifestyle choices, preventative self-care, natural interventions, exercise, nutrition, stress management, healthy relationships, and personal development to targeted populations (the uninsured, underinsured, young parents, seniors, and families experiencing chronic health or economic difficulties).
The Red Devils - $4,000The Red Devils provide quality of life services such as transportation, meals and groceries, house cleaning, complimentary therapies, and prescription drug co-pays for patients with breast cancer and their families. They are requesting funding to support their Howard County activities with their partners in the county - Howard County General Hospital (the initial site of this program in 2003), the Howard County Health Department and the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center (both of which joined the network in the early fall of 2007).
The Serenity Center, Inc. - $29,000Funding would support the second year continuation of a pilot wellness acupuncture and meditation program offered by Tai Sophia Institute three times per week and available to the 400 plus participants of the Serenity Center's 12-step programs to reduce stress and increase the success of the 12-step programs. Currently over 100 participants are involved in this project and several are beginning to report positive changes as a result of the program.
Voices for Children, Inc. - $12,400Voices for Children in partnership with Fostering Futures is proposing to develop a network of supportive adults to provide both support and guidance to older youth in foster care to improve the outcomes for young adults aging out of the foster care system in Howard County. This will be accomplished by using online social networks, and other Internet technologies along with traditional community outreach to identify and match supportive adults who will support foster youth with the development of life skills, and establishing supportive networks.
Howard County Health Department - $50,000This grant will fund the assessment of health/medical needs, including inpatient capacity and the provision of public health and medical-related services, supplies and personnel to be included in the Howard County Emergency Operations Plan for use during an influenza Pandemic or other community-wide health emergency.
AARP - Howard County Tax Aides - $5,000Funding to provide additional laptops, printers and other peripherals for AARP Tax Aide volunteers to provide tax services to the low income families involved in the Community Action Council'ss financial counseling classes. They will provide two volunteer counselors one day a week at the County's Gateway Building to work with 8-10 families each day.
Alianza de la Comunidad - $25,000Grant supports the continuation of parenting classes and workshops to Hispanic
parents living in Howard County, in order to strengthen their parenting skills and empower them to become advocates
for themselves and their children. They use a program called Active Parenting, which has created materials specific
to Spanish speakers.
Better Bedrest - $4,969Better Bedrest will conduct an outreach project to increase their visibility and calls from
Howard County residents by reaching out to the OB/GYN practices in the community as well as increasing community
awareness resulting in increased fund development.
Boy Scouts of America - $13,500Project supports the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America expansion of their two Howard County high school pilot
project, Cope on the Road to an additional four high schools in Fall 2009 for a total of 900 students in the six high
schools. Cope on the Road involves a series of initiative games and rope elements that instill the following seven key
skills: teamwork, leadership, decision making, problem solving, communication, trust and self-esteem.
Community Action Council - $15,000Support for the Step Up Preschool Screening Initiative to provide multi-disciplinary screening services
(hearing, vision, developmental, social and emotional, speech and language and oral health) to 100 eligible children
who are not currently enrolled in one of the three early intervention programs available in Howard County for children
from low income families. Children in need of remedial services will be referred to appropriate service providers for
intervention. CAC will provide follow-up and identify needed resources for those children needing interventions.
Courtesy on the Road, Inc. - $5,000Grant supports the continuation of Campaign for Courtesy on the Road,
an incentive-based program to encourage teenage drivers to consider and monitor their actions on the road,
avoiding road rage and adopting behaviors that will improve their safety and the safety of everyone on the roads.
FIRN, Inc. - $20,000Funding will support emergency preparedness activities for the foreign-born residents of Howard
County.
HC DrugFree - $29,880Funding to assist HC DrugFree maintain a reduced infrastructure necessary to provide mission-related services
and maintain their capacity to respond to the needs of the community.
Howard County General Hospital - $19,950Grant provides for the expansion the hospital’s perinatal bereavement program to include perinatal
hospice services to support families as they transition from delivery to a possible short life of their baby. Funds will
provide for the development of hospital policies that support palliative care in planning for an infant’s death, materials,
staff education and increased hours for the HCGH Perinatal Bereavement Coordinator to provide emotional, spiritual
and practical support to families as they make and carry out this difficult decision.
Lazarus Foundation - $5,000Lazarus Foundation will develop a mentor’s handbook for high school students to use as part of the
"PC’s 4 Kid’s" initiative. Technology savvy high school students are mentors who teach the kids who receive
computers as part of the initiative how to properly use them.
Leadership Howard County - $17,500With support from the Foundation a newly designed Leadership Premier program began with the 2008-2009 class
which incorporated changes in the way participants experience community issues, interact with decision makers and
expand their perspectives for future community volunteer and leadership commitments. Based on the experiences of
the first year LHC will be maintaining the consultant’s services for and additional year to address issues around
design and to complete the facilitation and evaluation components.
Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped - $9,000The Maryland Foundation for Dentistry for the Handicapped is a non-profit that provides pro bono dental
services for Howard County residents who are disabled and low income. The Howard County chapter, Donated
Dental Services (DDS) will determine applicants eligible for service from the 32 individuals on the waiting list who
have been waiting the waiting longest for services and provide needed services.
STEM Resource Center - $20,000The HCPSS STEM Resource Center will conduct an educational and hands on pilot event and eight
subsequent events to demonstrate the fun side of science, technology, engineering and math for children from age
four to eleven and their parents in communities that typically have low levels of participation in STEM activities as
a means to encourage careers in these fields.
The Red Devils - $4,000The Red Devils provide quality of life services such as transportation, meals and groceries, house cleaning,

A Woman's Journey - $5,000Grant will support efforts to maximize the participation of Howard County women in the Johns Hopkins Medicine's annual woman's health program, A Woman's Journey.
Lisbon Elementary School - $1,750Grant will provide funding for a program for struggling readers from Lisbon and Bushy Park Elementary Schools to receive direct instruction and practice during the summer.

A Woman's Journey - $27,930A Woman’s Journey, a program of Johns Hopkins Medicine, proposes to present a series of seminars to increase awareness of various health conditions, provide the most current medical information to help prevent and/or improve self-management of targeted conditions affecting woman’s health.
A-OK Mentoring - Tutoring - $4,875Provides start-up funding for A-OK Mentoring - Tutoring as the organization formalizes and seeks 501(c)(3) status.
Columbia Tomorrow - $500To support the visit by the mayor of Columbia, MO to attend the Bike Power Summit with local community leaders.
Alpha Foundation of Howard County - $10,800The organization is requesting assistance to enhance their information management system and website in an effort to document and evaluate the fraternity’s educational programs as well as support for a board evaluation of need and subsequent needed training.
American Institute of Wine & Food - $13,500Days of Taste is an educational discovery-based food program for elementary school age children. It provides them with an opportunity to experience and compare diverse food tastes, visit a farm and prepare a fresh salad. The program encourages children to eat a variety of whole foods and emphasizes the importance of balance in food for good eating and good health. Building on the pilot at Swansfield Elementary School, Days of Taste is proposing a similar program for 12 Howard County elementary schools.
Association of Community Services - $5,000Project is to develop a business plan that will support an expanded visitation and exchange center focused on meeting the needs of at-risk families dealing with issues such as domestic violence, substance abuse and allegations of child abuse.
Bridges to Housing Stability, Inc. - $31,200Project seeks support for a two-year multi-agency collaboration to keep at risk families in their homes and reduce homelessness in Howard County. The collaborative partners in this project are CCH, Grassroots, Christ Church Link and the Department of Citizen Services. The group has recently received a grant of $253,898 for two years from the Homelessness Prevention and Re-housing Program (HPRP), a part of the Administration’s American Re-investment and Recovery Act of 2009. Foundation funding is needed to support a small portion of the project.
Department of Citizen Services - $45,000The Department of Citizen Services is requesting funding to improve and expand the Homeless Management Information System currently used by several providers to the eventual County wide data collection system for all human service organizations. While currently not being used effectively, the system has far reaching capabilities that could enhance data collection.
FISH of Howard County - $40,000Grant will sustain the FISH Pharmacy Assistance Program which addresses the pharmaceutical needs of the Howard County "at risk" population for an additional two years.
Girl Scouts of Central Maryland - $7,500Project Anti-Violence Education (PAVE) is a peer directed program of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland that addresses major problems facing youth today, namely, violence, bullying, peer pressure, smoking, drinking, internet and personal safety as well as gangs. PAVE engages young people in identifying problems/concerns in their communities and possible solutions thus helping them to make positive choices. The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland wish to pilot an expansion of the Baltimore based program in Howard County.
Homewood Center - $4,790The Legacy Project exposes Homewood Center students to the use of written language, primarily poetry as a way to safely process feelings and ideas. The program consists of fifteen workshops and other activities such as field trips
that are designed to enhance the students’ self-confidence and self-esteem.
NeighborRide - $25,000Funding of this project is for capacity building for expansion and sustainability through community outreach for both volunteer and passenger recruitment in the outer regions of the County; increasing support for older adults with low incomes; and review and update of risk management policies and procedures.
Office of Children's Services - $34,140Project will continue to build on the work of the Foundation’s Connections initiative by maintaining the strong momentum of Voices for Change ensuring that youth continue to have a voice in their future, providing a bridge between the work of the Youth Task Force (established by the Howard County Council) and the actual creation of a Youth Commission, and working to assure that Howard County has access to state and federal funding to reach the goals of Positive Youth Development.
The Arc of Howard County - $10,000The Arc is requesting funding to develop a new three year strategic plan that will fully assess the mission, core values and underlying service assumptions; as well as, identifying primary goal areas for the future. The Arc’s current strategic plan will conclude at the end of their 2010 fiscal year (June 30, 2010). The economy has created a multitude of challenges for The Arc. With these challenges comes the possibility of new opportunities to reach out to current clients, donors, volunteers, employees and the community at-large.
The Salvation Army - $30,000Project supports crisis services for Howard County families with low-income in need of eviction and utility turnoff prevention assistance. The focus is to help to maintain safe, stable housing and ultimately help to reduce homelessness in Howard County.
Volunteer Center Serving Howard County - $20,000To increase the capacity of the volunteer clearinghouse and disaster volunteer database and to encourage volunteerism as a part of a healthy, productive lifestyle by fostering community resiliency/preparedness and involvement. Volunteer mobilization is a critical piece of Howard County’s emergency response capacity. The Volunteer Center has been active in disaster preparedness at both the local and regional level. Additionally, the Center serves as clearinghouse for volunteer activity within the county.
