Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math
The Nation's Future Depends on
It
STEM stands for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math. It’s a movement in
Howard County -- to produce creative students
who are problem solvers, innovators, logical
thinkers, and strong communicators.
The county’s STEM initiative is
strongly supported by our business community,
the Howard County Public School System and key
community leaders.
STEM education spans
the entire public school continuum. From
an education standpoint, it allows students to
make sense of the world around them -- by
applying concepts and ideas from STEM and other
disciplines.
From a business
perspective, STEM’s overall goal is to stay
competitive in today's global economy. STEM
skills are vital to maintain our country’s
lead in a variety of areas. And the STEM
workforce is a critical factor if we’re to
maintain our global edge.
And today, the
competition is fierce, coming from countries
that require more school hours and more time
spent on STEM subjects. Many believe that this
is a competition that the United States needs
to win.
What is the STEM initiative? Why
is it so important? And what can you do to make
it succeed?
