While it aggressively
assists the nonprofit community, the Foundation
is mindful
of the fact that it is itself a nonprofit
organization. In this context, the
Foundation aspires to operate according to
the highest standards of organizational
structure and operation. Following a
rigorous selection process, the Foundation
was awarded the Maryland Association of
Nonprofit Organizations' Seal
of Excellence. This designation of
organizational distinction is based on meeting
55 standards for management oversight,
financial operation, ethical operations
and board oversight. Walter Sondheim, Jr. of
the Greater Baltimore Committee
said, "In today's world, nonprofits cannot
simply be 'do-gooders.' Nonprofits
must act ethically and be held accountable
for achieving results." With
this in mind, the standards are based on
honesty, integrity, fairness, respect,
trust, responsibility and accountability in
nonprofit program operations, governance,
human resources and financial
management.
