This funding supports the Tenant-Landlord Counseling Hotline which services 800 Howard County families each year.

Centennial High School - $3,500
The grant provides funding for testing of residential drinking water in order to help educate the public about the composition of our water supply and its impact on their health.

Center for Community Health - $50,000
Strategies This grant will provide the funding for startup development for the Center for Community Health Strategies created to research and plan strategies to address community-wide issues like access to health care and older adult health.

Department of Fire & Rescue Services - $44,189
This project will implement a Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) to identify and train volunteer neighborhood leaders to assist and respond during natural or manmade disasters.

Department of Fire & Rescue Services - $200
This project supports attendance by Howard County firefighters at the Community Emergency Response Team National Conference for training.

Department of Police - $15,000
This project will develop the Police Department capacity to serve the Hispanic members of the community including the availability of Spanish-speaking officers.

This grant provides continued support for the North Laurel Community Police Program which began in 2000.

Domestic Violence Center of Howard County, Inc. - $30,000
This grant will provide assessment and "inhouse" substance abuse treatment for batterers with a substance abuse problem. It will streamline the process of treating offending spouses with abusive behaviors.

Family & Children's Services of Central Maryland - $30,000
This grant provides training and support to family members providing care to elderly relatives. Family members are taught how to effectively care for their elderly relatives in a home environment.

Family Tree - $4,000
Funding will support a substance abuse education and screening component for the existing MENS program which promotes positive responsible fatherhood for adolescent men.

First Presbyterian Church - $31,000
This grant will strengthen the Parish Nurse programs in Howard County by providing training on diabetes risk assessment and work with attitudes about divorce and the impact on children.

FISH of Howard County - $3,000
This funding supports the pharmacy assistance program for prescriptions for acute illnesses and/or emergencies.

This grant will provide funding for a grant writer to assist the organization in obtaining funds from Kaiser Permanente.

This funding will develop a plan for a wellness center at the community college to provide free services and programs to meet the needs of credit and non-credit students.

Howard County Autism Society - $10,000
This project supports the training of inclusion aides for an after-school care model for students with autism and other similar disabilities.

Howard County Center of African American Culture - $10,000
This project will expand the Heritage of Excellence program for African American youth by adding a curriculum focusing on health and health care careers.

Howard County General Hospital - $126,109
This grant funds the purchase of supplies, equipment and training to complete the Hospital's Emergency Preparedness Plan.

This grant will support educational and nutrition programs presented to physicians to improve outcomes for individuals with diabetes.

This project will expand access to children's services for Hispanic and Korean families not fluent in English through translation of printed materials and interpreter services.

Funding supports development of a community asset-building model for youth in the Oakland Mills community.

This funding will support a consultant to develop and pilot a survey tool for consumers receiving mental health services in Howard County.

This grant provides support to the Vivian Reid Fund which provides emergency cash assistance for older adults in need.

This grants supports the implementation of the Adolescent and Youth developmental asset program in three pilot schools (one elementary, one middle school and one high school).

Howard County Public School System - $25,923
This grant provides funds for the purchase of special communications radios to be used in the event of a disaster so that the school system can communicate with the Howard County Emergency Communications Command Center.

Howard County SAFE Kids Coalition - $12,000
This project expands the SAFE Kids program by increasing the number of trained technicians to educate parents about the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts for cars.

This grant will develop and implement a program for high school students regarding prevention of traumatic brain injuries.

This grant supports development of a substance abuse prevention and health education program for Korean Americans in Howard County.

Lazarus Foundation - $2,750
Funding will support high school students in developing and conducting a computer summer camp for middle school students in Howard County. Special attention is given to at-risk students.

Leadership Howard County - $30,000
This grant provides partial operating support for three years to the Leadership U program to enable staff to conduct outreach for long-term financial support.

Long Reach Church of God - $40,000
This program funds the second year of the faith-based Youth Asset model which will focus on building relationships between parents and their children to promote positive attitudes and behaviors in children.

Medbank of Maryland, Inc. - $30,000
This funding supports the provision of medication and case management to patients in Howard County who are unable to afford their prescriptions.

Office of the State's Attorney - $1,500
This grant supports the establishment of a community justice office in the Owen Brown Village Center. Funding specifically supports office utilities.

Our House Youth Home - $11,300
This project will develop a manual for other organizations to implement a program for home retrofitting to enable older adults to live as independently as possible.

Running Brook Elementary School - $65,000
This project supports the program manager position for the second year of the Parents As Teachers program. The program is designed to give parents the knowledge and tools to support their young child's development and enhance the child/parent relationship.

Steven Daniel Jeffreys Foundation - $3,000
This grant supports a one-day grief recovery program for children who have lost a parent or a sibling.

Stevens Forest Elementary School - $3,059
Funding supports the development of a "Healthy Families Library" at Stevens Forest Elementary School to help needy families and strengthen relationships between families and schools.

STTAR Center, Inc. - $15,000
The project will support organizational planning for the future during the transitional phase between executive directors.

Sunrise Rotary Club of Ellicott City - $4,000
This grant supports a summer enrichment program for low-income children living in Ellicott City through Head Start. The program includes activities in arts, music, creative drama and movement.

The Enterprise Foundation - $8,000
This funding supports a planning process for the Oakland Mills Community.

The Women's Giving Circle - $18,500
This grant provides startup costs for new women's philanthropy group supporting programs and services for women and girls.

Vision Care International - $11,000
This project will develop patient marketing and educational materials in Spanish and English to increase the client base for fee for service and insurance clients.

Volunteer Center Serving Howard County - $18,800
This grant supports the Volunteer Center in its goal to recruit and train volunteers as well as match them with volunteer opportunities throughout the county.

Wilde Lake High School - $1,692
This project provides monthly after-school sessions for Hispanic students to learn about careers, community service, college opportunities, healthy social development, etc.

Wilde Lake Middle School - $3,450
This program will target students in need to accelerate student achievement using several innovative modalities.

Winter Growth, Inc. - $15,000
This funding will support scholarships for the Wellness Day Program for older adults who are unable to afford the program.

Grants reporting for the 2001 Annual Report ended at the mid-year mark of 2002, despite the fact that we are on a calendar fiscal year. Beginning with this Report, we are aligning our fiscal year with annual report coverage. Grants made in the first half of 2002 are reported in this edition as well as in the last Annual Report.
