From the President and CEO
As a community philanthropy, The
Horizon Foundation is no stranger
to ledgers, balance sheets and
banking. Since we don't engage
in fundraising, we're reliant on
investment income.
We started out with $68 million in 1998, and our principal now exceeds $80 million. That's after deducting out all of our operating expenses and grantmaking over a six-year stretch. This extraordinary track record, in large part, stems from the Foundation's Finance Committee and our external investment consultants.
But the real investment story is on the expense side. The Horizon Foundation has aggressively pursued organizations, projects and individuals who are equipped to make a difference in community health and wellness. We've made major, intermediate-sized and smaller grants to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations, government agencies, public schools and others.
The Foundation also invests the time and talent of our outstanding board and staff. Here, we seek to operate at the system and policy levels. We engage multiple partners in collaborative learning to produce change. We challenge others to achieve permanent solutions beyond alleviating short-term organizational stress. And we confront community issues with humility and great respect for those in the trenches.
This report highlights some of
the investments the Foundation made
over the past year. It was a year
of great energy, community collaboration
and innovation. We look forward
to working with our many partners
in the future, to invest in this
remarkable place called Howard
County.
