Howard County and Horizon Foundation Together Strengthen Domestic Violence Protection
Thursday, April 21, 2011(Howard County Government Department of Public Information) -- Howard County Executive Ken Ulman has announced that the Horizon Foundation has awarded $95,000 to the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) to execute a long-term strategic effort that focuses on continuity of programs and services and strengthens internal processes during the DVC’s leadership transition period.
An interim support team led by Dr. Inga James is currently in place and is working to ensure that the non-profit's transition plan is on track. The Department of Citizen Services will serve as the fiduciary agent, while the Department’s Community Service Partnerships (CSP) Manager will be responsible for monitoring DVC’s progress and program improvements.
"DVC has experienced a number of challenges over the past year, but the Horizon Foundation award represents a crucial step in restoring the County's and community's confidence in this organization and the critical resources available to those in crisis," said Executive Ulman. "I want to thank Rich Krieg and the Horizon Foundation for their continued support. I also want to commend the new DVC board for their leadership during this transitional period."
The Ulman Administration has remained committed to strengthening and expanding domestic violence related services since the establishment of the Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit, which provides comprehensive investigation and follows-up on domestic violence cases in the county.
The FY12 Operating Budget, proposed yesterday, provides permanent funding within the Sheriff’s Office to deliver peace and protection orders 24/7; this move further helps to protect the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
