Family Health Expo Attracts 600
People
The 4th Annual Family Health
Expo, hosted by Murray Hill Middle School and
the Howard County Health Department, attracted
more than 600 people, said organizer Cathy
Smith.
Of the attendees, 382 identified
themselves as members of ESOL (English for
Speakers of Other Languages) families.
Interpreters were provided for attendees
speaking Cantonese, Gujurati, Hindi, Korean,
Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish. Other
attending ESOL families spoke Russian, Urdu and
Farsi, but did not require
interpreters.
Services provided included
breast health exams and HIV tests, as well as
vision, hearing, oral health and blood pressure
screenings. Attendees also attended
hand-washing and cooking demonstrations and
received seated massages. Exhibitors from
county nonprofit human service agencies
provided information and referral.
The
Family Health Expo was sponsored by the
Southeast Horizon Council, an advisory group to
The Horizon Foundation, which provided funding
for the event.
