Horizon Awards Honor Leadership - Humanim CEO Wins Richard G. McCauley Award

Richard M. Krieg, President and CEO of The Horizon Foundation, has announced that Humanim, Inc. President and CEO Henry E. Posko, Jr. was named winner of the Richard G. McCauley Leadership Award at the 2nd Annual Horizon Awards Breakfast on May 26.

The award is named in honor of The Horizon Foundation's first Board Chair.

"Henry is a man of character and vision," Krieg said to the 100 well-wishers at the awards presentation. "He is a practical man, a good manager and an entrepreneur, boldly and confidently taking risks on behalf of the people he serves."

Posko has spent 25 years, 20 as CEO, with Humanim, a not for profit which provides rehabilitation services to children, adults and seniors in the Baltimore-Washington area. He is a graduate of Leadership Howard County and Leadership Maryland for which he served as Chairman of the Board. He has been President of Maryland Works and the Association of Community Services of Howard County and has served on numerous task forces locally and state-wide.

Posko has been recognized as Maryland SBA Welfare to Work Employer of the Year in 2000, Audrey Robbins Humanitarian of the Year in Howard County in 1996, and Leadership Maryland�s Outstanding Leader of the Year for l999.

In addition to Posko, the Foundation honored Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine for its health education programming, and four high school students were given the Horizon Health Action Award for their "extraordinary, successful leadership in engaging the Maryland General Assembly to lower the age of consent in Maryland for bone marrow donations."

Howard County General Hospital was recognized for "its innovative prevention programs including health screenings and fairs and ongoing partnerships with the Howard County Public School System and an array of targeted projects with the nonprofit community," said Horizon Board Member Shirley D. Collier.

Four Oakland Mills High School graduating seniors, Cherise Carpenter, Monica Holloway, Kimberly Sealey and Jade Vaughan, were cited for two years of research, planning, lobbying and testifying in Annapolis trying to increase the number of bone marrow donors by eliminating a prohibition on donors younger than 18.

Horizon Board Member Malynda Hawes Madzel presented the awards to the young woman, calling them "remarkable" and predicting "wonderful futures ahead of them."

A special Community Appreciation Award was presented to Alton J. and Hillery Scavo in recognition of "over three decades of leadership, service and substantial accomplishments on behalf of the people of Howard County."

Horizon Board Chair Padraic M. Kennedy recounted the history of the couple�s contributions, including Al Scavo's impact on the community as a 35-year veteran of The Rouse Company, where he concluded his career as Executive Vice President, Director of Development.

Al Scavo, Kennedy noted, is also well-known for his civic work, including leadership positions with the Columbia Festival of the Arts, Howard County Hospice, Voices for Children, The Columbia Foundation and as Chairman of the Board of Howard County General Hospital during the time it joined with Johns Hopkins Medicine. He now serves on both the boards.

"Hillery Scavo is most memorably known for her service with the Health Alliance," Kennedy said. "She is widely credited with championing the free clinic during a difficult time, raising money and the profile of the organization," he added, noting that she personally spent nine months as an unpaid staff member during the search for an executive director. Hillery also served on the Howard County Commission for Women where she helped create the Howard County Women's Hall of Fame.
