Richard M. Krieg, President and CEO of The Horizon Foundation, has announced that Howard Community College President Mary Ellen Duncan was named winner of the Richard G. McCauley Leadership Award at the Horizon Awards Breakfast on June 11.

The award is named in honor of The Horizon Foundation's first Board Chair. "Dick McCauley has had an extraordinary impact on the community," Krieg said, citing McCauley's 30 years of volunteer service in Howard County.

"Nobody, but nobody, has had such a transformative effect on the many, many nonprofit organizations he has served," said current Board Chair Padraic M. Kennedy. "In every case, his leadership has solidified the organization, expanded its vision and strengthened its ability to serve."

McCauley has served as President of the Board and a founding member of the Columbia Festival of the Arts, Chairman of the Board of the Columbia Association, and President of the Board of the Columbia Foundation, as well as other leadership posts in local non-profit organizations.

Duncan, who has been President of HCC since 1998, exemplifies vision and leadership, Krieg noted. "Mary Ellen is recognized locally, regionally and nationally for her commitment to the community college mission and for her entrepreneurial skills. Her transformative impact extends well beyond the College, affecting the health and wellness of the entire community."

In addition to Duncan, the Foundation honored the county's government Cable Channel, GTV, for its health education programming, and eight local churches were given the Horizon Health Action Award for providing food and shelter for the homeless during this past winner.

"The Health Education Award recognizes the outstanding service provided by GTV," Krieg said. "Its high quality broadcasts help engage citizens and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community."

GTV has been showcasing health issues for over two decades, with health news and reports a regular part of programming. Currently, the countys daily news program, Inside Howard County, includes a segment presented by the Health Department. On the Horizon, a monthly program examining health and community issues, has been airing since 2001. County Public Information Officer Victoria Goodman and GTV Manager Tara Gary accepted the award on behalf of the station.

The churches were honored with the Horizon Health Action Award for enabling the county's first cold-weather shelter program. The congregations provided warm food and accommodations for 61 people, ages 6 months to 63 years, who needed shelter during the bitterly cold winter but were unable to find room at Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center. Temporary quarters were set up in the churches, and volunteers provided meals and transportation.

The eight congregations honored were: Bethany United Methodist Church, Church of the Resurrection, First Presbyterian Church of Howard County, Glen Mar United Methodist Church, Kittamaqundi Community, Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church, St. John Baptist Church, and Trinity Episcopal Church.

The Horizon Foundation addresses health and wellness issues through strategic grantmaking, community initiatives, and partnerships with private and public institutions. It is a community health foundation that takes a broad view of health. The Foundation is committed to helping build a healthy and resilient community in Howard County, MD.
