The Horizon Foundation has committed $3.5 million to Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine to support the largest capital campaign in the facility's history.  Added to a $760,000 capital grant to the Hospital in late 2007, the Foundation has approved $4,260,000 for the Hospital's expansion.

"The relationship between the Hospital and the Foundation is broader and deeper than that of a grantor-grantee," Horizon President & CEO Richard M. Krieg said.  "This grant reflects shared priorities and will help the Hospital continue providing life-saving treatment to the community."

"We are delighted and very grateful that the Horizon Foundation is granting such a generous gift to Howard County General Hospital to ensure that the health care needs of our community are met," said Victor A. Broccolino, president/CEO of Howard County General Hospital.  "Both the hospital and the Horizon Foundation strongly share the same goal of improving the health of our entire community.  This leadership grant will help us to do just that."

Historically, Horizon has not made grants for capital projects.  "In considering the Hospital's campaign, we decided that there is a crucial need for this project and that it is appropriate in terms of the Foundation's strategic objectives and the needs of a growing local population," Krieg added.

The Hospital and the Howard Hospital Foundation, the fundraising arm of HCGH, intend to raise $105 million to support its Campus Development Plan, $30 million of which is expected to come from local philanthropic sources. HHF board chair Evelyn Bolduc and Beverly White-Seals, co-chair of the campaign steering committee, said that this major commitment will bring the gifts and pledges to over $17 million.  The planned expansion, which includes 110,686 square fee of new construction, will be complete in fall of 2009.  That new construction includes a new four-story, five-level pavilion that will house three inpatient floors as well as space for outpatient services and support departments.  Renovation of 122,970 square fee of existing hospital space will involve nearly every level of the existing hospital building and is slated to be completed by fall 2011.  In addition, a new 550 car parking structure is being constructed on the southeast corner of the campus.

"This transformation will enhance our service delivery and enable us to address the total patient experience from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation and wellness," said Broccolino.

The Horizon Foundation, Howard County's largest philanthropy, addresses community health issues through a strategic grants program and partnerships with private and public institutions.  As a community health foundation, it takes a broad view of health and wellness and is committed to helping build a healthy and resilient community in Howard County.
