Students Hold Fundraiser for Teen Center in Glenwood

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Between October 2007 and January 2008, teen representatives from Glenwood Middle School and Glenelg and Marriottsville high schools met monthly with staff members of the Glenwood Community Center and the Western Horizon Council, an advisory group to The Horizon Foundation, to discuss the types of activities teens would like to see at the center.

Teen Center Advisory Board members Ben Jubar and Kyle Emanuel play pool in the new teen center at the Glenwood Community Center while Center Director Terri Hilton and Afterschool Teen Scene Leader Jen Gilbert watch.
A desire for less-structured programs "where teens can just hang out" has resulted in the new teen center. A room dedicated to such standard teen interests as playing pool and ping-pong is currently available from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. A center ID is required.

The event Feb. 9, raised money to purchase such items as a big-screen TV and video games for the teen center.

"The students knew exactly what they wanted," said Horizon Council coordinator Cathy Smith. "We have high expectations for the success of this teen center and expect it to be a template for other community centers."

The community center is located at 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. For more information contact Terri Hilton at 410-313-4840.
