The Horizon Foundation has awarded scholarships to Jordan Borak and Lisa Kawata to attend the Leadership Premier program of Leadership Howard County.  The 10-month program is designed to give a comprehensive overview of local issues and resources and empower participants to strengthen and transform the community.

Borak lives in Savage and Kawata lives in North Laurel.  The two are members of the Southeast Horizon Council, a citizens advisory group to the Horizon Foundation.  They are the first recipients of financial support from Horizon to attend leadership training as part of the foundation’s strategic concentration on enhancing the health and wellness of the Southeast area of the county.

"Residents of Southeast Howard County are underrepresented in community groups and county-wide efforts," said Rich Krieg, President and CEO of the Horizon Foundation and a 2001 graduate of Leadership Howard County.  "In order to increase the engagement of Southeast residents and encourage them to address community-specific and county-wide issues, and advance positive outcomes – both individually and collectively – Horizon intends to support leadership development opportunities," he added.

Borak has been involved with the Savage Neighborhood Watch, the Savage Community Association, and the Carroll Baldwin Memorial Institute. He works as a government contractor and has an M.A. and Ph.D. from Boston University.

Kawata has a history of involvement with local PTA executive boards and is a founder of a school-based women's support and enrichment group. She is currently a volunteer with the Howard County Library System and has been a professional journalist for 21 years.

The Horizon Foundation, Howard County's largest philanthropy, addresses community health issues through strategic grants, community programs and partnerships with private and public institutions.
