Simon Joins Policy Analysis Center As Director

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Viviana Simon has joined the Policy Analysis Center as its halftime director.

She joins the center from the Society for Women's Health Research, where she was vice president for Scientific Affairs and directs the organization’s scientific programs, including its Isis Fund Interdisciplinary Research Network.

The Policy Analysis Center is a partnership between The Horizon Foundation and the Association of Community Services of Howard County (ACS). It focuses on policy research, analysis, evaluation and data collection that respond to the needs of the county’s health and human service organizations.

Horizon Foundation president and CEO Richard M. Krieg said it was Simon's "substantial background in research management" that made her standout from the rest of the candidates in a regional search for the Policy Analysis Center’s director.

ACS Executive Director Anne Towne notes that since Simon lives and volunteers in Howard County, she brings the additional knowledge of local resources and programs.

Simon began her career at Proteome Inc./Incyte Genomics, where she was senior editor of human databases. She joined the Society for Women's Health Research in 2002 as program manager.

She holds a B.A. in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a Ph.D. in cell biology from Columbia University. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Banting and Best Institute at the University of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada.

A resident of Columbia, she serves on the board of directors of Alianza de la Comunidad, an organization that advocates for the county's Hispanic community.

Founded in 2007, the Policy Analysis Center has conducted a number of studies that have informed leadership decisions in the health and human services arena.  More information on the Center can be found at www.policyanalysiscenter.org.  Simon can be reached at 410-715-9543.

The Horizon Foundation, Howard County’s largest philanthropy, addresses community health issues through strategic grants, community programs and partnerships with private and public institutions.

The Association of Community Services of Howard County is a network of human services providers, community and faith-based organizations, government agencies, and community advocates. For information about the Association of Community Services, call 410-715-9545 or visit www.acshoco.org.
