Monday, January 24, 2011 Tweet
The Horizon
Foundation has awarded a scholarship to Quinton
Askew to attend the Leadership Essentials
program of Leadership Howard County. The
six-month leadership development program is
designed for younger professionals who are
considered rising stars and who have expressed
a personal desire to be engaged in community
service.
Askew is Program Coordinator
at the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center,
which is managed by the Community Action
Council. It is a "one stop shop" that houses
service providers addressing the needs of the
residents of Southeast.
Prior to
joining Community Action Council, Askew worked
with the Department of Corrections as a
Clinical Supervisor. He has over 10 years
experience in Community Development, Strategic
Planning and Conflict Resolution. He has a
B.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of
Baltimore and is the current President of
Maryland American Youth Football Conference, a
youth football sports league.
Askew is
the third recipient of financial support from
Horizon to attend leadership training as part
of the foundation’s strategic concentration
on enhancing the health and wellness of the
Southeast area of the county. Previous
scholarship recipients Lisa Kawata and Jordan
Borak are now participants in the Leadership
Premiere program.
"Southeast Howard
County is underrepresented in community groups
and county-wide efforts," said Rich Krieg,
President and CEO of the Horizon Foundation and
a 2001 graduate of Leadership Howard
County. "Horizon is supporting leadership
development opportunities in an effort to
address community-specific and county-wide
issues, and advance positive outcomes – both
individually and collectively," he
added.
The Horizon Foundation, Howard
County's largest philanthropy, addresses
community health issues through strategic
grants, community programs and partnerships
with private and public
institutions.
The Foundation's current
initiatives include assessing and implementing
strategies aimed at improving physical
activity, healthful eating and other positive
lifestyle changes; implementing the Southeast
Health Initiative, which focuses on improving
the determinants of health and wellness in
southeastern Howard County; and working towards
improving the efficiency and effectiveness of
individual health and human service agencies
and the overall service delivery
system.
