Horizon Presents Leadership Award to County Executive
The Arc of Howard County Wins Health Advocacy Recognition

The winners of the Eighth Annual Horizon Foundation Awards have been announced by Richard M. Krieg, president and chief executive officer of the Foundation. The recipients will be honored at an awards breakfast May 26 at the Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel.

The organization's Richard G. McCauley Leadership Award will be presented to Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, a frequent partner in Horizon initiatives.

The award is named in honor of The Horizon Foundation's first Board Chair.

When elected, Ulman was the youngest County Executive in the State of Maryland. He has distinguished himself by being an unabashed booster for Howard County, opening up government to local citizens and launching sentinel initiatives focusing on the environment and health. 

"Ken is passionate about access to affordable, quality healthcare," Krieg said.  "He is a champion of improving health for those who live, work and learn in our county."

The salon volunteers at the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center will be presented the Health Action Award for their compassionate treatment of cancer survivors.

The center was founded by Tina Broccolino, wife of Howard County General Hospital President and CEO Vic Broccolino. Volunteers from Howard County's finest salons and spas provide hair and skin care services to cancer survivors in the privacy of the center.

The 2011 Health Advocacy Award will be awarded to The Arc of Howard County, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary of achieving full community life for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Started by a small group of parent volunteers in 1961, The Arc of Howard County helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities achieve full community life, including independent living and employment, and provides a wide range of supports for family members.   

 
 Girls on the Run of
Howard County
A new honor, the Community Lifestyle Improvement Award, will recognize two efforts on behalf of young people, Girls on the Run of Howard County and ProStart, a program of the school system's Culinary Academy. Girls on the Run, program for girls in 3rd-8th grade, is designed to prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living through physical training and health education.

ProStart is a two-year career-building program for high school students who are interested in culinary arts and restaurant and foodservice management.  In addition to the job training, students learn about healthy cooking and healthy eating and develop nutritional recipes that could end up being used in school cafeterias.

Superintendent, Howard County Public Schools

Sydney L. Cousin, Superintendent of the Howard County Public School System, is being presented the Community Appreciation Award. Appointed superintendent in 2004, Cousin is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a nationally recognized school system with an enrollment of 49,748 students.

The Horizon Foundation is one of the largest health philanthropies on the East Coast.  Its mission is to improve the health and wellness of those living and working in Howard County, Maryland through innovative programming, grantmaking and strategic partnerships with others.
