Monday, September 25, 2006

HC DrugFree and the Elkridge Horizon Council are hosting Family Communication Night, with free dinner and workshop, “Beyond SAFE: Pre-teens and parents talk about alcohol and other drugs,” on Tuesday, October 3, at the Elkridge Library.  Presenters are from the Howard County Health Department.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the program begins at 7 p.m. The workshop will include joint and separate sessions for the students and parents in attendance.

The workshops will help students and their parents develop the skills to work together and take action now to prevent substance abuse in the future.  Topics to be covered include: laying the groundwork for preventing drug abuse, talking with your children effectively about drugs, overview of drugs and their effects, helpful websites, risk factors and protective factors, and legal consequences for parents and children regarding substance abuse.

The Elkridge Horizon Council is an advisory group made up of people who live and/or work in the community.  The groups advise The Horizon Foundation about issues of significance and makes recommendations about ways to address those issues.

HC DrugFree, a local non-profit organization, is dedicated to helping parents guide their children away from using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. For information, visit www.hcdrugfree.org.

There is no admission fee for either the dinner or the workshop, but reservations are required by September 29. The Elkridge Library is located at 6540 Washington Blvd. Call 410-313-5077.
