Substance Abuse Prevention Workshop and Dinner - Program for Middle School Students and Their Parents

HC DrugFree and the Elkridge Horizon Council
are hosting Family Communication Night, with
free dinner and workshop, “Beyond SAFE:
Pre-teens and parents talk about alcohol and
other drugs,” on Tuesday, October 3, at the
Elkridge Library. Presenters are from the
Howard County Health Department.
Dinner
will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the program
begins at 7 p.m. The workshop will include
joint and separate sessions for the students
and parents in attendance.
The
workshops will help students and their parents
develop the skills to work together and take
action now to prevent substance abuse in the
future. Topics to be covered include:
laying the groundwork for preventing drug
abuse, talking with your children effectively
about drugs, overview of drugs and their
effects, helpful websites, risk factors and
protective factors, and legal consequences for
parents and children regarding substance
abuse.
The Elkridge Horizon Council is
an advisory group made up of people who live
and/or work in the community. The groups
advise The Horizon Foundation about issues of
significance and makes recommendations about
ways to address those issues.
HC
DrugFree, a local non-profit organization, is
dedicated to helping parents guide their
children away from using alcohol, tobacco and

admission fee for either the dinner or the
workshop, but reservations are required by
