Akbar is passionate about social and systemic change, equality, diversity and strategic communications.
At the Horizon Foundation, Akbar supports use strategic communications to drive social change through social media management, writing, event marketing, website management and other tasks.
Most recently, Akbar worked as editor-in-chief of the Howard Community College Times where he led a publication team and oversaw the production of the biweekly student newspaper. Akbar has served as the president of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Howard Community College for more than two years and has been an active advocate for the local LGBTQIA+ community and community college students. While at HCC, Akbar created the first informational panel discussion about gender and sexuality that drew dozens of students, staff, faculty and the public. Akbar has testified before the Maryland General Assembly and Howard County Council and has been featured in campus videos and publications to promote community college funding. He is a recipient of the Howard Community College Outstanding Service Award.
When he isn’t busy supporting communications at the Foundation, Akbar enjoys exploring nature, meditation, the arts and eating healthy and delicious food. He currently lives in Columbia.
