2018 Mental Health Film Festival: Tuesday, June 5 in Columbia

Join the Horizon Foundation for our second-ever Mental Health Film Festival, an event to build awareness and compassion for members of our community facing mental health challenges. This year, the Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary and launching a new strategic plan with a deep emphasis on mental health.

For one evening, the event will feature four concurrently running films, each followed by a discussion and reflections from individuals living with mental illness. This event is FREE, but registration is required. Learn about the films below and click the button below to register for a ticket.

Because the films will run concurrently and space is limited, each attendee must be registered for only one ticket to one film. All attendees must be registered separately. Please note this film is now sold out: ANGST is a captivating film experience that explores anxiety in children and teens and how we as a community can help. The goal of the film is to spark global conversation and to garner attention towards how anxiety impacts the community. The film features candid interviews with children and young adults who struggle, or have struggled, with anxiety–including a special appearance by Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Angst aims at bringing the faces of anxiety out of the shadows. In the film, mental health experts discuss the causes of anxiety, its sociological effects, as well as resources and tools for those with anxiety and their families. This film contains: stories of child and adolescent anxiety, references to suicide and depression.

HOLLYWOOD BEAUTY SALON follows the lives of staff and clients at a salon inside the Germantown Recovery Community, a nonprofit mental health facility in Northwest Philadelphia. Rachel “Hollywood” Carr, the owner and creator of the salon, learned to manage her own mental health challenges and now uses her spark for creativity and social change to help others in recovery take pride in their individuality and find the courage to heal. This lively and creative community supports each other by sharing stories of survival, getting their hair done and ultimately reclaiming their lives. This film contains: stories of trauma, domestic violence, abuse, suicide, drug use and various mental health conditions.

Please note this film is now sold out: LOOKING FOR LUKE traces the experience of Luke Tang, a well-liked, passionate Harvard sophomore who took his family and friends by surprise when he died by suicide in 2015. This short documentary, which includes an introduction by Harvard alum and NBA player Jeremy Lin, follows Luke’s parents as they attempt to understand why this happened. They uncover the truth about their son’s death through the realization of depression as a treatable mental illness and are now sharing their story with others, particularly Asian American parents. This film contains: stories of suicide and depression. Note: Following this film, attendees will participate in a proven “QPR” training and learn how to recognize the warning signs of a person in a suicide crisis (Question), suggest that the person seek support (Persuade) and connect the person to local resources (Refer).

OF TWO MINDS follows several people who reveal what it is like to live with bipolar disorder. In their brightest days and darkest nights, raw interviews allow viewers to see how it feels to have bipolar and how it impacts their day to day lives. From manic highs of happiness to deeply depressive despair, viewers get a chance to see both sides of bipolar disorder. This documentary aims to put a human face on the condition and to create a platform for dialogue with the hopes of changing the perception of bipolar disorder and those who live with it. This film contains: profanity, explicit sexual themes and drug use.
