Sabbatical for our CEO
After 13 years of leading the Horizon Foundation, the Board of Trustees has afforded me the opportunity to take a three-month sabbatical for the purpose of rest, reflection and rejuvenation. As sure as I am about the value this period holds for personal growth and contemplation, I am even more assured that the Foundation remains in strong and steady hands with Glenn Schneider as acting president and CEO, working in deep partnership and collaboration with Anne Brinker, chief operating officer. And of course, they will continue to benefit from the sage guidance and wisdom of Chris Fortune, chair of the board, and Lisa Pearson, vice chair of the board and the entire board and staff of the Foundation.

A successful HCPSS Taste Test #2
Earlier this month, the Healthier Choices Coalition and the HCPSS Food and Nutrition Service teamed up to present the second school food taste test of the school year. More than 350 students and their parents had the chance to taste and rate potential new school menu items. It was a great opportunity for us and the school system to engage with families and ensure we are providing fresh and nutritious meals for our students.
Do you want to improve access to better, fresher, tastier and healthier food in Howard County? Get involved and join the Healthier Choices Coalition today!
Check out our recent policy successes
Despite continued uncertainty at the federal level and state budget challenges, the Horizon Foundation and our partners have continued to work diligently to protect the important progress we have made in recent years to improve health and to advocate for policies that fight disparities and advance equity. The Foundation strongly believes that we must work to change policies and systems that have prevented many people, especially those from communities of color, from living a healthy and abundant life. Visit our website to learn more about our recent victories at the state and local level in advocating for policy change that will help all people achieve better health.
Reminder: First Thursday – June 5th
Thank you to everyone who has been participating in our First Thursdays community conversations! Please join us on June 5 at 10 a.m. at the Horizon Foundation’s office for a guided conversation and connection with your fellow Howard County residents.
This month, we will be discussing the importance of school-based mental health services, especially during a time of rising mental health challenges for our youth.
If you would like to join this month’s discussion, please RSVP to our Policy & Community Engagement Director, Jennifer Holland, by Monday, June 2. Please also reach out to Jennifer if you are interested in guest hosting a First Thursdays discussion in the future.
