Connect with your community: Join us for First Thursdays!

As many of you know, the Horizon Foundation has been hard at work over the past year engaging with the community in new ways to develop our new strategic plan. One of the things we heard from you was the desire to connect with your fellow community members and talk with one another about issues facing the community. Thus, the First Thursdays conversations were born!

Community members are welcome to join us on the first Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and a guided conversation about key issues on the minds of fellow Howard Countians. This past month, we invited folks to bring an article from a local news outlet that spoke to them. The result, stemming from this article, was a rich discussion about the need to equip people with trusted information about health screenings, timing and other preventative measures to help them better advocate for themselves inside and outside healthcare settings.

Our next First Thursdays conversation will take place at the Horizon Foundation’s office on November 2 at 10 a.m. We plan to discuss how the Foundation and other non-profit organizations can best reach people where they are with critical healthcare information – but the floor is yours to bring what’s on your mind!

If you would like to attend the next First Thursdays community conversation, please RSVP to Jennifer White Holland by October 31.

What We’re Learning: Reports and webinars available now!

Also as part of our strategic planning year, we’ve been gathering important data from our community about significant barriers to good health faced by our residents of color, especially those who live in lower-income households. From one-on-one interviews, to door knocking, to polling, to focus groups and surveys, all of this data will help inform our strategic plan moving forward.

We recently held two webinars hosted by several of our partners that have been with us along the way to help gather this information from the community. But if you missed out, don’t worry! Those webinars and the data reports are now available to review on the Howard Community Health Foundation’s website. Thank you to all who were able to join us and ask questions, and to our partners who have helped us better understand how the Foundation can best serve our community!

What do you think of the meals served at your child’s school?

Take our survey to let us know! The Healthier Choices Coalition is interested in learning what you think of the school meal services in Howard County schools. Please take this 5 minute survey to share your opinion about the food in your child’s school. Your responses will help inform the Coalition’s work to ensure that students have access to healthier and better tasting foods at school. Thank you!
